Arctic-Hudson Bay Lowlands
The Hudson Bay-Arctic Lowlands is a landform region of Canada, located more specifically in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. This region formed in the Paleozoic Era, when the enormous weight of a glacier sunk the Canadian Shield and the area became lowlands when the glaciers retreated. This region consists of metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rock, and a few major waterways near this region include Hudson Bay and James Bay.The Hudson Bay Lowlands are covered by a swampy forest and it’s vegetation includes bushes, trees that are spread apart, stunted tamarack, and black spruce. The soil is usually waterlogged and permafrost covers a majority of the land. In comparison, the Arctic Lowlands only consist of low growing shrubs and seeds (no trees). This region has very poor vegetation, as a result of the land being barren and covered in permafrost, not allowing the soil to absorb water. The climate in the Hudson Bay-Arctic Lowlands is too cold to support a variety of vegetation as the winters are extremely brutal and cold. Two major cities within this landform region are Churchill and Resolute. A significant economic activity that is present in this region and is dependant on the natural resources is tourism. Tourism is a huge part of this landform region as numerous people across the world travel to the Arctic Lowlands to see the Northern lights, polar bears, and beluga whales. Also people travel to this region to go skiing and/or rock climbing on mountains. This economic activity is immensely important because this landform region has a small population, and this natural resources bring uncountable people into this region. This helps the economy in this region a lot, as it creates a variety of jobs, which result in profit. An environmental issue that is currently a problem in this landform region is the pollution created from mining. This leads to deforestation, water pollution, and land has to be cleared in order to mine, which destroys animal's habitats and vegetation. This also seriously affects employees health who are involved with the mining, and can ruin beautiful tourist scenery due to the amount of pollution it creates.
